Check out this extraordinary video of a B-2 Spirit undergoing wing flutter testing in the ‘90s. In simplest of words, the air flowing over the wing can/does induce periodic vibrations in the wing structure, if the vibrations start to match the natural frequency of the wing structure, you get flutter. If flutter is unchecked, meaning the periodic force continues to increase the amplitude of the vibration present, the wing structure will eventually break. Dangerous but a pretty cool phenomenon. |
